Rodrigo y Gabriela – 9:30 Club – Washington, DC – 28 Feb 2010
Metal, acoustic, flamenco and rock performed by a Mexican duo that cut their teeth playing the tourist-packed Temple Bar and Grafton Street pubs of Dublin, Ireland? Not necessarily a traditional way to stardom, but Rodrigo y Gabriela fine-tuned their ever-changing sound in these high traffic-areas and eventually caught the ear of Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice, who invited them to open for him at the giant Oxegen music festival in 2005 just outside Dublin. Bolstered by the exposure, Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero went on to become breakout stars with their 2006 self-titled hit album that ended up No. 1 on the Irish charts. The album was produced by John Leckie (Radiohead and My Morning Jacket) and featured several original tracks as well as their acoustic versions of rock anthems by Metallica and Led Zeppelin—some of which were on display at their sold-out 9:30 Club show. Opening for Rod y Gab was The Alex Skolnick Trio—known for its inventive jazz-infused hard rock and metal.

Rodrigo y Gabriela – Glasgow – 26 Nov 2009 (***** out of *****) – Daily Record On record, Rodrigo y Gabriela are a good band. On stage, they are one of the most enthralling live acts around. Playing on a bare stage with just two acoustic guitars, the pair create a noise and atmosphere that any full band would envy. Rodrigo is a fine guitarist, but the real star of the show is Gabriela, who uses her instrument to create the bulk of the percussion. During ‘Logos’ (from their 11:11 album, inspired by jazz-rock master Al Di Meola), she even manages to affect a drum solo while her partner shredded away on his acoustic. Her irreverent personality added to the atmosphere, with her expletive laced comments to the audience getting a lot of laughs. The metal influence is apparent with the duo, not just in the crowd favorite cover of Metallica’s Orion and Master Of Puppets, but in the way they attack their guitars. They finish with a furious version of Tamacun, a perfect end to an astonishing performance.
